About the event
When does a grape variety officially go mainstream? Albariño is not yet in the big leagues like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, but in recent years has become the ‘it girl’ of the wine world. This Spanish grape variety, native to the cool Atlantic coast of Iberia - specifically Rías Baixas in Galicia and Vinho Verde in northern Portugal (where it is known as Alvarinho) - has been steadily gaining popularity.
Over the years, Albariño has spread beyond its native regions, becoming a signature grape in Uruguay, which shares an Atlantic influence from the southern hemisphere. More experimental Albariños are now popping up in regions as far-reaching as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, California, France, England, and Japan. These developments indicate that the grape is going international.
In this tasting, Victoria will explore Albariño from its native Atlantic origins in Rías Baixas and Vinho Verde, as well as showcasing unexpected styles such as traditional method sparkling and oak-aged, followed by a range from diverse regions across the world.
